Net Materials

Net materials can be easily found at many hardware stores. Nets can be made from virtually any type of thin rope-like material. Nets are used for a variety of reasons. They can be used to catch fish, they can be used to decorate, they can be used in sports, and to hold in cargo.

Nets have been used for many years by fishermen and are still used today. Most often fishing nets are constructed from artificial polyamides like nylon although organic polyamides such as wool and silk have also been used. There are many different types of fishing nets; hand nets, cast nets, coracle fishing nets, Chinese nets, gillnets, drift nets, stake nets, trammels, seines, and trawls. These nets all work in different ways to catch fish or bait.

Nets are used in a variety of sports; baseball, soccer, tennis, volley ball, and others. Nets are often used in baseball as part of the batting cage. Often the frames are constructed from aluminum. Stretched on all open surfaces of the frame is a 1 ¾” mesh black netting. Soccer nets are often constructed from a heavy duty, strong polyethylene netting often treated with a UV protective coating. Tennis nets are often hand tied and braided. They are constructed from polyethylene netting. Volleyball nets are also made from polyethylene netting. Like tennis nets they are braided and feature a reinforced top with a covered top and bottom.

Cotton fishing nets are often used to decorate with. These nets can vary by size and color. Some retailers offer dark brown nets, others a more natural color. However, you can also locate nets that are blue, yellow, orange, red, green, or white. They are often used in nautical or beach inspired décor.

Mosquito nets are also often used in home décor. Mosquito nets are often used to make decorative bed canopies. The net is often gathered at one point and then have a hoop placed about a foot down. The remaining net is allowed to drape down, often to the floor. The net should cover all edges of the bed.

Cargo nets are another popular use for nets. Cargo nets can be made from different materials. Their ideal purpose is to hold cargo in the back of a truck. Some cargo nets are made from strong 6mm 100% stretch shock cord, allowing the net to return to its original shape after use. Other cargo nets are made from high strength polyester webbing. These are often one piece, featuring hooks on the ends.
